Llyn Park Mawr Bird Hide

It was a real privilege to build at this beautifully wooded lake-side location at Llyn Park Mawr. We set out to design a structure inspired by the setting, that celebrated the interplay of light and water, and the architectural quality of the surrounding trees. The half octagonal shape offers a wide view across the lake, whilst the open back gives the interior a light airy quality. The hide was designed with wheelchair access and use in mind and offers enough covered space to accommodate visiting groups.

The joinery utilises a mixture of traditional and stick frame techniques and is constructed of naturally durable douglas fir from a single site in Machynlleth. In order to minimise the disturbance and impact to the site, the components of the building were carried in by hand.  The green roof was covered in a site native substrate (removed from the footprint of the building) and seeded with several varieties of sedum.
